Em 1º de janeiro de 1964, a BBC exibiu ao vivo o primeiro episódio de TOP OF THE POPS, diretamente de uma igreja desativada em Manchester. Naquela histórica apresentação passaram pelo programa ninguém menos do que os The Rolling Stones e, para fechar, o single  mais vendido daquela semana, "I Want to Hold your Hand", dos queridinhos ingleses do The Beatles. E isso porque, na época, mal se sabia se a atração duraria mais do que algumas semanas. No fim das contas, o programa transformou-se no mais duradouro show musical da TV mundial, permanecendo 42 anos no ar.

Por seu cenário, passaram bandas clássicas como The Who, The Kinks e AC/DC, além de estrelas extravagantes como David Bowie, Alice Cooper e o grupo Queen, liderado pelo inesquecível Freddie Mercury. Mas não estamos falando só de rock, porque ao mesmo tempo em que o TOP OF THE POPS recebeu o Deep Purple, também acolheu o ABBA. E tanto a fúria grunge do Nirvana quanto o glamour  pop de Madonna tiveram seu espaço ao longo dos programas temáticos compilados pela BBC, trazendo o melhor dos arquivos desse verdadeiro palco cult com o melhor de quatro décadas de cultura pop.
